Bono is a genius...

Now I must admit I have had a longtime crush on this man, not just because he is an amazing performer but because of his humanitarian work. His involvement in the release of red line merchandise to benefit the Global fund, is absolutely brilliant. He understands that most people in industrialized nations like ours would rather be in the malls than in Africa to assist the poor. So why not bring charitable opportunities to the places where people with cash hang out instead? Last week Bono and Oprah Winfrey hit Chicago’s Mag mile to promote the new “Red” line of clothing, accessories and gadgets, including a special-edition iPod, that will raise money to fight AIDS in Africa. These “Red" items will go on sale in the coming weeks by Gap Inc., Apple Computer Inc., Motorola Inc., Converse Inc. and Emporio Armani. Some companies, like the Gap, will give 50% of the proceeds to The Global Fund, an organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. I don’t know about you all, but I’m going red for my Christmas shopping this year. Not only will it make my shopping easier (fewer items to fret about), but I look forward to my purchases benefiting people afflicted with poverty and HIV. Check out Project Red to see what qualifies as charitable contributions. Bono rocks. And so does Martin and Osa, a brand new retailer owned by American Eagle that's dontating 100% of their sales today, October 20th, to breast cancer research. You can see my coverage of the grand opening of this store on View from the Bay today. I hope other companies follow this lead!

Some people seem to defy age and gravity…

and fitness expert Kathy Smith is one of those people. I got the chance to hang out with her at the gym, and couldn’t believe that she has been making fitness videos since 1980—even before Jane Fonda. When Kathy arrived, she was wearing a fuzzy purple sweater, windswept blond hair, and a sleek pair of slacks, and can I tell you—she looked phenomenal! I know fitness is her business, but she is one of those supernatural people that age gracefully--her toned figure didn’t seem to have an ounce of fat, yet she had curves in the right places.

She has come out with a new DVD called Matrix Method—Ultimate Sculpt. You can see my interview and workout with this spunky gal here . The basis of her matrix work-out is to imagine a clock around you while working out, and working your muscles through every hour of that “clock.” So, for example, instead of just doing forward lunges, you lunge to your left and right as well, like at three o’clock and nine o’clock, and lunge diagonally as well—like in the two and four o’clock positions. In this way you will work and develop different muscles which can help you run your daily errands—from picking up your children to lifting bags of groceries. Kathy works out with other superfit looking people in what looks like an urban loft, with cool tribal dance music playing in the background. Kathy is a riot throughout this DVD, jumping around with boundless and infectious energy. She does muscle-multitasking in every move, so in half the time you work more muscles. Whether squatting while doing bicep curls, or forward planks that work your abs and your arms at the same time, this work-out makes every minute count. I tried the workout for myself, and it was actually fun and went by very quickly—only about a half an hour long, with bonus abs and advanced sections. I consider myself a fit person, but for the next four days my abs, arms, legs and butt were super sore! If you feel like you never have the time to get to the gym, I highly recommend this CD to work muscles you never knew you had. I have added this DVD to my weekly cross-training rotation.

Mischief, movies and mavericks…
If you have been watching View from the Bay on a regular basis, you may notice that I’m in the studio more often. I will be reporting from the studio from now on instead of live out in the field, which will give me more time to develop good stories and have a fun time in house with co-hosts Janelle and Spencer. Almost too much fun. Like when I went to the Sonoma Harvest Festival and decided to play a little prank on them. You can check out my mischievous antic here. Be sure to come back because I will have another movie review on a powerful film about a hero that emerged from apartheid South Africa called Catch a Fire. You can check out the trailer here in the meantime.

My interview with talented actors Tim Robbins, Derek Luke, and some of the other cast and crew members will be airing on View from the Bay before the movie release of October 27th. Philip Noyce’s directing is maverick filmmaking at its finest, using several different film and video formats to draw the audience emotionally into the main character’s heartwrenching story. Robbins and Luke's performances were phenomenal--award-winning material for sure. Again, if you want to check out my other journals, click on the “archive” link in the top left corner. Thanks again for your support, e-mails, and ideas!

Peace Y'all...
