Food Network Chef Guy Fieri …

is larger than life, but is not such a diva that he turns down hilarious opportunities, like doing a cooking demo in a hardware store. You might know this charismatic guy with the spiky platinum hair as the winner of the “Become a next Food Network Star.” Since then he has been traveling around the country working on two of his own shows, “Guy’s Big Bite” and “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.”

”Guyfieri"

Way back when View from the Bay first started, I met him in Santa Rosa where we did a live shot together from the Santa Rosa County Fair. We just hit it off, so he agreed to meet with me again and teach me a few things about sushi. He arrived in his flashy yellow corvette, with his peeps carrying in humongous platters of ready made sushi of all kinds. The poor guy’s mouth was totally numb from a dentist appointment he just had, but he was a good sport and went ahead with the interview. Orchard Supply requested we do the demo in one of their stores, since they were sponsoring Guy in their huge event called the "How-to Fair." So, Guy and I obliged with this request and actually had a good time. You can check out the demo right here. The jack-ass (or gringo) roll he created sounds plain weird, pulled pork, soggy fries, avocado, rolled rice and rice paper and topped with a chile garlic mayo? But I swear it works and tastes smoky and delicious. There was a crowd of fans standing around during the demo, all hoping to get a taste of his creations and get an autograph. Guys is completely approachable, and stayed around to chat them up and give out all the sushi. Guy, don't change or else I will have to kick your gringo bootay. His series, Guy's Big Bite, will be premiering on Food Network on April 23rd.

Living Green with Blanche Shaheen…
This week, next week, and beyond you’re going to see several stories on View From the Bay that explore green living, in other words, making choices that not only are easier on the environment, but are safer for your health and well being. I have done quite a few green stories for View from the Bay in the past, including environmentally friendly gift ideas, home furnishings, and cleansers for your home. Today I will give you a tour of San Francisco’s first eco-friendly hotel, the Orchard Garden Hotel. My mantra is, why should you stop caring for the environment while you’re traveling? This hotel is clean, modern, centrally located, and has a fabulous restaurant called Roots, featuring organic cuisine. I highly recommend this hotel to all of you out-of-towners reading my journal right now. Here I am hanging out in their gorgeous garden terrace:

The hotel is made of partially recycled materials, from the concrete to the wood to the carpeting, features recycle bins in the room, and washable linens (which saves on dry cleaning and gets rid of potential funk from other guests--ewww). Anyway I will keep you posted on my eco finds on this site, and hopefully create a whole other section about living green!
